3. Action mechanism

Chlorxidine is a molecule that needs its disinfectant power to be made up of a catyonic component with lipophile groups: so it is equipped with a positive surface load that comes attracted by the negative load characteristic of cell membrane components. The liofilized part favors absorption.

Depending on the concentration, there are two types of action:

1. Low concentration damages the cytoplasmic membrane resulting in a leakage of material

cellular and inactivation of enzyme systems;

2. Increased concentrations cause coagulation phenomena at protolamatic level, without

loss of components.

4. Action spectrum

The spectrum of action is wide and includes the vegetative forms of positive and negative Gram bacteria; it also acts on mycetes and viruses.

The pH interval in which chlorrexidine is most effective is between 5.5 and 7, corresponding

Then to the surfaces of the body.

5. Employment areas

Antiseptic-antibacterial to be used in the sanitary field (hospitals, O.R.s, outpatients,

emergency rooms ...) preferably when detergent action is also required:
